Young Ukrainian Basketballer Embracing New Life in Worcester
Eleven pupils from Ukraine joined the four schools in The RGS Worcester Family of Schools last year following the crisis caused by the war in Ukraine. Now, one of those pupils, Max, is making a name for himself through his talent for basketball.
Max, who grew up playing basketball in Kyiv, has joined Worcester Wolves basketball club, playing with the Under 17s. This achievement has seen Max recently appear on BBC TV and have his story featured on the BBC News website and BBC Breakfast.
Max and his mother, Alina, came to the UK last year, leaving his father behind in Kyiv. He has settled well into life at RGS and in Worcester, embracing the many Co-curricular opportunities available and is now showcasing his talent for Basketball.
John Pitt, Headmaster, commented, “I have been so pleased to see how all of our Ukrainian pupils have settled in to RGS life so well and embraced the new community in which they are living. This is where independent schools like RGS that are a part of their local community can make a real difference to ordinary people’s lives and respond immediately in time of crisis, far faster than the government. This is exactly why our schools are, and should continue to be, supported as charities by our politicians”.
