Year Ten Pupils Conquer the Peak District
Between 25 and 27 May, 41 Year Ten pupils embarked on an adventure to the stunning Peak District, where they successfully completed their Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Qualifying Expedition. Their trip marked the culmination of eight months of rigorous preparation which began with a training expedition to the captivating Long Mynd last September. The pupils further developed their skills through training at School, culminating in a challenging Practice Expedition to the awe-inspiring Black Mountains in March.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a highly regarded national programme that encourages young people to engage in outdoor activities, develop skills and foster a sense of independence and resilience. The Year Ten pupils showcased their exceptional dedication and determination as they undertook this demanding Silver Award expedition.
Operating in eight self-sufficient and independent teams, the pupils each stayed at two of four different campsites during their trip, ensuring they experienced a variety of landscapes and challenges. Over the course of three tiring but exhilarating days, each team travelled approximately 50 kilometres, starting their trek through the grounds of the magnificent Chatsworth House and concluding their expedition walking through the picturesque Dove Dale and Manifold Valley before reaching Ilam Park.
Throughout the journey, pupils took on the responsibility of cooking their meals, fostering their self-reliance and resourcefulness. This aspect of the expedition not only encouraged them to develop practical skills but also nurtured a sense of teamwork as they supported one another in creating nourishing meals in the great outdoors.
The pupils’ determination and resilience were commendable as they tackled the rugged terrain of the Peak District. The breath-taking landscapes provided the perfect backdrop for their adventure, pushing them beyond their comfort zones and inspiring an appreciation for the natural world. They overcame various challenges, not least navigating with a map and compass in unfamiliar territory.
The success of this expedition would not have been possible without the guidance and support of the dedicated staff at RGS. A team of experienced supervisors accompanied the expedition, providing valuable guidance and encouragement along the way. Their expertise ensured the safety of the participants while empowering them to push their limits and achieve their goals.
The Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Qualifying Expedition was not solely a physical endeavour; it was an opportunity for personal growth, self-discovery, and the forging of lasting memories. The students demonstrated resilience, adaptability, and effective communication throughout the expedition, skills that will undoubtedly serve them well in future endeavours.
