‘Worcester is Green’: Earth Day at RGS
The 22 April was Earth Day and the Environment Committee decided to mark this occasion by encouraging staff and pupils to wear an item of green clothing. It was wonderful to see an array of green socks, shirts, ties, hair scrunchies and cardigans worn by so many students, who clearly feel passionate about their planet. The screens around school displayed a variety of informative videos and reminders about the little things we can change in our lives that can have a positive impact on the planet. At lunchtime we handed out packets of wildflower seeds to students and staff so hopefully they will go on to create a little paradise for the bees in their own gardens in the near future. Here are a few of the ideas we shared in Earth Week:
- Avoid disposable coffee cups; try to use a reusable one where you can
- Be energy aware: turn off lights and appliances if they are not being used
- Improve recycling skills: know what can be recycled kerbside, and see if you can find a Terracycle waste scheme for any other plastic waste you may generate in your homes
- Know where your food comes from: try to eat more seasonally and buy locally reared meat if you can
- Consider how often you buy clothing you don’t really need, or simply throw away barely worn clothes. Try swapping clothes with friends, fixing damaged clothes and donating to, or shopping from, charity shops
To mark their final year in the School the Upper Sixth members of the Environment Committee are looking forward to planting a tree on the RGS site in the coming months. They hope it will mark a turning point in the approach the school community is taking in protecting our planet.
