Ukrainian Community events at RGS – “A little bit of Ukraine here”
We were pleased to welcome families to the School’s Flagge Meadow Sports Ground, in the latest in the Ukrainian Community events hosted by the RGS Worcester Family of Schools held just before Half term.
The fortnightly ‘get-togethers’ aim to bring together members of the Ukrainian community, now living locally in Worcestershire and beyond and provide an opportunity to have their own space where they can listen, connect and support one another.
The Ukrainian Community event also welcomed presenters and camera crew from BBC Midlands Today. BBC journalists interviewed RGS staff member, Keith Breese, RGS Translation Support Assistant, Polina Oliinyk, as well as new RGS pupil Max and his mother Alina, to form a feature which was broadcast on BBC Midlands Today on Friday 27 May.
Max is one of ten pupils from the Ukraine who have joined the RGS Worcester Family of Schools over recent months, whilst they live with local host families in Worcestershire. When asked about his time at RGS Worcester so far, Max said: “My school in Ukraine is very small and this school is very big – it’s like Hogwarts in Harry Potter”. Max’s mother Alina, explained, the ‘get-togethers’ are like “A little bit of Ukraine here.”
Whilst Ukrainian families chatted, RGS pupils from various Year groups contributed with a friendly game of Cricket on the beautiful Flagge Meadow pitch on what was a gloriously sunny day.
The Ukrainian Community event will continue to run every two weeks, with the next event planned for 24 June, between 11.00am until 12.30pm. To register for the event, please email ukraine@rgsw.org.uk.
Visit the RGS Worcester website for further details on the event.
