Taking to the airwaves
Mrs Vincent and Mrs Bond (aka DJ Vincent and DJ Bond) are the proud new voices of ‘Radio Lockdown’, the newest radio show taking the School by storm. In a bid to engage and entertain pupils during the rainy break times, Mrs Bond and Mrs Vincent share their ‘Lanter’ (literary banter) with listeners in Year Seven, Eight and Nine. The weekly episodes take the form of 20-minute radio podcasts discussing a range of literary topics. Episode one was released on Monday 28 September and saw DJs Vincent and Bond discuss their favourite childhood books, ‘Skellig’ and ‘Witch Week’. Listeners (pupils and teachers) were asked to reminisce back to their time at primary school and send in their most-loved titles. Within two days of the first release, over 140 pupils were signed up to the Radio Lockdown Showbie group, where as well as listening in, pupils can complete quizzes, word searches and have access to a range of recommended reading lists.
No radio show would be complete without its own jingle and Mrs Vincent has had great fun in playing various songs to listeners where lyrics have been changed to reflect her love of reading. Pupils have been incredibly engaged and several listeners have written new jingles and lyrics (including one pupil’s endeavour to re-write the lyrics to Queen’s ‘Radio Ga Ga’); the good humour and creativity of RGS pupils never fail to impress. Episode two looked at teachers’ much-loved childhood books and in particular the works of C.S Lewis. Mrs Vincent and Mrs Bond then went head to head in the first-ever RGS radio ‘Riddle Off’, where Mrs Bond has vowed to improve her riddle abilities after her embarrassing defeat. RGS pupils were also challenged to have a ‘Riddle Off’ with their friends and were given five riddles to tackle.
Next week’s episode includes very special guests: School Captains Darcey Chambers and Tom Ehlers kindly joining Mrs Vincent and Mrs Bond to be interviewed about their favourite books and offer some great advice for Lower School pupils. New episodes are released each Monday morning; stay tuned!
