Sean’s Roller Takes Centre Stage at Edgbaston’s Sustainable Cricket Day
Cricket pitch preparation is known for being not particularly sustainable but at RGS, the Grounds Team has been using electric mowers and an electric sports roller to prepare our Cricket pitches with zero carbon emissions.
This makes RGS pioneers in zero carbon Cricket pitch preparation, especially since the electricity used in this process originates from the solar panels on our sports hall roof, which was installed several years’ ago as a green initiative to reduce carbon emissions and support sustainable energy at RGS.
The sports roller used at RGS is unique and recently took centre stage at the England vs New Zealand T20 match held at Edgbaston, Birmingham, on Sunday 3 September. It was decided that this would be Edgbaston’s ‘Go Green’ day with first sustainable UK game of its kind with a focus on cutting emissions across all scopes of the ground’s footprint.
The only one of its kind globally, and featuring cutting-edge eco-friendly technology, the roller was transported to Edgbaston by its designer RGS Head of Grounds, Sean Lloyd. On the day, the roller underwent thorough testing before and after the match, even making an appearance on the BBC and Sky TV!
This achievement reflects our School’s commitment to sustainability and technological innovation and fits with our commitment to be carbon neutral by 2030, as part of the national campaign, ‘Let’s Go Zero!’.
The roller continues to undergo trials at Edgbaston and there is a possibility that it may make appearances at other famous Cricket grounds such as Lord’s and The Oval in the near future.
