Rugby Season Scores Big Wins and Welcomes New Coaching Talent
The Rugby programme at RGS has seen significant progress, marked by early achievements already this season. As we approach the fourth week of the Michaelmas term, our pupils have admirably represented RGS Worcester in 33 competitive fixtures, emerging victorious in 24 of them. This success can be attributed to the collective hard work, discipline, and eagerness to learn displayed by our pupils, who have wholeheartedly embraced the coaching enhancements and opportunities offered by our programme.
We are delighted to welcome back Mr Aleki Lutui, a Tongan International front row forward, and welcome England International Mr Matt Kvesic, to our coaching team. Additionally, the inclusion of Mr Matthew Jones, Lead DPP West Midlands Coach, has strengthened our collaboration with the local RFU Academy system. Their valuable experience and expertise have significantly enriched our Rugby provision. Furthermore, Mr Sam Thomas has joined us as a full-time Professional Rugby Coach, bringing a positive influence to our Middle School provision.
The dedication of our Senior players has been remarkable, evident in their victories over Malvern College and Adam’s Grammar School after a rigorous six week pre-season training regime. 1st XV Captain Daniel Halkon and Finn Nicol have represented the West Midlands Academy and also gained valuable experience within the Scottish system, gaining recognition in their International Camps. Similarly, pupils in the Middle School have actively engaged in sessions within the West Midlands Academy system, with many pupils participating in the Under 16s and Under 15s sessions.
Our Lower School pupils have consistently impressed, with standout achievements from our Under 13A team’s turnaround from an 8 tries to 4 loss against Dean Close School last season to a resounding 5 tries to 0 victory this time. This success demonstrates the positive impact of the coaching and opportunities provided to these young athletes. Both the Under 13 A and B teams are currently undefeated so far this season.
The start of the Rugby season has been characterised by skills development, promising performances, and, most importantly, enjoyment. These early achievements have laid a strong foundation for the rest of the season, building anticipation for the Modus Cup scheduled for Sunday 10 December. We are excited about the journey ahead and look forward to more successes as the Rugby season progresses.
