Rugby Resilience at RGS
It is an exciting time for the School’s Rugby club as the prospect of some competitive Rugby in the New Year draws ever closer. The decision was made early on to move our Rugby season to the Lent term in order to give the players the best chance of playing some matches. The patience and adaptability shown by the students and staff have highlighted the core value in our RGS Charter for Sport: Resilience. Despite Covid-19 postponing the normal playing season, we have taken the opportunity to focus on the core fundamentals and to develop and condition the players, using both the Fitness Suite and Flagge Meadow.
The recently updated guidance from the Rugby Football Union is encouraging and we will be playing rugby during Games sessions from January, steadily building up to conditioned contact to ensure player welfare and safety. We very much hope to be able to arrange some competitive fixtures after February Half term. There may be an opportunity to play some 15-a-side matches, but we will also be looking to play some 7s, with the season hopefully culminating in the Rosslyn Park HSBC National Schools Competition.
It is with great pleasure that we welcome Aleki Lutui into the Rugby coaching team. Aleki, who has already done some work with our Senior teams, brings a wealth of forwards expertise and experience, having played for Worcester Warriors, Gloucester RFC and having regularly captained the Tongan national side, playing in 3 consecutive World Cups!
Jon Perks, the Academy Coach Development officer at Worcester Warriors, also continues his association with RGSW as he takes ownership over the under 14 age group. In addition, we will have two Worcester Warriors Community coaches assisting with our junior age groups, further highlighting the growing relationship between the School and Worcester Warriors.
