Rowers ‘Go for Gold’ at British Indoor Championships
RGS rowers made a lasting impression at the British Rowing Indoor Championship held in Birmingham. The Championship, a highlight of the ‘Fit Fest’ event held at the NEC, sees more than 5,000 ‘everyday athletes’ take part in separate competitions over three days including the ATHX Fitness Champs, SiD Triple Threat, British Indoor Rowing Championships, and the English Weightlifting Championships. Over the three days, the event draws in around 1,500 competitors and a staggering 10,000 spectators.
For many of our rowers, this marked their inaugural experience in an indoor competition, and for a select few new starters at RGS, it was their very first Rowing event. Despite the nerves and excitement, RGS Worcester’s rowers achieved excellent performances across all age groups.
In several events, RGS secured positions in the top half of the results. Notable achievements include Lucy Whiteley and Olivia Hodgson, who secured impressive 5th and 6th places in the Sixth Form Girls 2,000m event.
The Boys’ relay team raced in a category that blended ages from Year Nine to Upper Sixth. During the competition the Year Ten Boys clinched a commendable 14th place, while the Year Eleven Boys secured an impressive 9th place.
The pinnacle of the day unfolded in the Mixed Junior Relay, the penultimate event of the Championship. The RGS Worcester team, Lucy Whiteley, Olivia Hodgson, Daniel Foster, and Jack Hill, executed a flawless race plan. Their synchronised efforts and unwavering determination propelled them to victory, earning them the coveted title of the 2023 British Rowing Indoor Champions for the Mixed Relay.
The RGS community congratulates the Rowing team for this outstanding achievement. Congratulations to all of the RGS competitors: the strong national results are a testament to their hard work, teamwork, and dedication to the sport.
