Young Fashion Designer UK Competition Launches at RGS
Young Fashion Designer UK is an exciting national, annual competition that celebrates young fashion designers’ talent to showcase and promote the exceptional work achieved by students aged 11-18 who show flair and passion in the work they produce. We are delighted once again to host the Midlands Regional round of the competition, with pupils across multiple Year groups excelling in the competition.
Open to pupils throughout the United Kingdom, the competition is hosted by two regional centres: Kent College, which covers entrants from Oxford and the south, and RGS Worcester, which is for entrants based in the Midlands and northern regions of the country.
Pupils enter the competition by submitting a selection of worksheets that link to the specific theme of the competition – the brief for 2025 is entitled ‘Eco Thread Challenge – transform the threads of yesterday to the fabrics of tomorrow’.
A team of industry professionals judge the entries and invite twelve regional finalists to exhibit their work and attend the Finals Day, held at each regional centre. Throughout the day, finalists participate in a hands-on fashion upcycling workshop, providing an opportunity to showcase fashion and textile skills by creating a finished garment in a timed challenge, as well as hear about the inspirational careers of YFD UK judges, previous competition winners and the network of industry professionals involved.
The competition Finals Day for the Midlands Region will be held at RGS Worcester in June and will welcome finalists to the Textiles Department in the RGS Design Centre.
Head of Textiles, Mrs Jo Bishop, said, “It is always fantastic to welcome finalists to RGS Worcester and facilitate an exciting Finals Day here in school. The quality of the work submitted and produced on the day is always impressive and provides a great opportunity for both staff and pupils to meet and share a passion for creativity”.
After last year’s winner coming from RGS, pupils will be encouraged to enter the competition alongside their current Textiles lessons in school.
In this fifteenth year of the competition, YFD UK continues to go from strength to strength, with the number of entrants increasing year on year. Winners of the competition often go on to great things, working in the fashion and creative industries and the competition provides an excellent stepping stone towards Higher Education courses in fashion and further career opportunities.
