Year Eleven Become ‘Sixth Formers for a Day’
On Monday, pupils in Year Eleven from RGS Worcester and RGS Dodderhill had the opportunity to become ‘Sixth Formers for a Day’. Pupils experienced what life is like in the Sixth Form, trialling lessons and new subject choices while also getting to experience Gordon House, our designated Sixth Form Centre, and ‘Joe’s’, our newly refurbished Sixth Form café.
The day provided valuable insight for Year Eleven pupils into how A Levels and BTEC/ CTEC studies differ from their current academic work at GCSE. Pupils were able to gain a flavour of the breadth of opportunity and support on offer in the Sixth Form at RGS Worcester, and an awareness of the host of Co-curricular activities available and award-winning Careers guidance.
Year Eleven pupils participated in lessons on the new subjects available in the Sixth Form to better understand what these offer (for example, Business Studies, Economics, Philosophy, Politics, Psychology, BTEC National Diploma in Sport, Level 3 Sport Leadership and CTEC Business).
Being a ‘Sixth Former for a Day’ forms part of our programme to prepare RGS Worcester and RGS Dodderhill Year Eleven pupils for the important transition after GCSE, which also included the Subject Choices Evening on Thursday for the pupils and their parents. This informative evening began with an introduction by Mr Mark Evetts, Head of Sixth Form, about making subject choices, and was followed by Mrs Audrey Williams who spoke about the School’s extensive Careers support. Pupils and parents were then able to choose subject presentations given by Heads of Department. There was information about the Extended Project Qualification (or EPQ) which is worth half an A level and introduces pupils to research-based study similar to following a university course.
With so many subjects to choose from and a breadth of opportunity ahead of them, pupils were excited about the prospect of choosing the subjects they love and studying these in greater depth in the Sixth Form.
