Set Sail for Adventure: RGS Presents ‘Treasure Island’!
Next month, the School summer production of ‘Treasure Island’ will be performed in the Performing Arts Centre and the cast and crew have been working extremely hard to prepare.
‘Treasure Island’ is a classic adventure novel written by Robert Louis Stevenson which was first published as a book in 1883. The story follows young Jim Hawkins, who discovers a treasure map in a pirate’s chest and embarks on a thrilling journey to find the buried treasure. Along the way, Jim encounters an interesting cast of characters, including the enigmatic Long John Silver, a charismatic yet deceitful pirate who becomes both friend and foe. As Jim and his companions set sail for Treasure Island, they face treacherous seas, mutiny, and the dangers of a hidden treasure guarded by greed and betrayal. Filled with swashbuckling action, suspense, and themes of loyalty and courage, ‘Treasure Island’ remains a beloved tale of adventure and discovery.
Teacher of Drama, Mr Jak Garrity comments, “This year in Drama we wanted to ensure that every Year group has an opportunity to be a part of a school production so we made the decision to change the summer production so that it was open for Years Seven and Eight pupils, unlike previous years where it was for Years Eight and Nine. This means that for all pupils involved, this will be their first production at RGS. The decision to perform ‘Treasure Island’ was made very early on in the year as I was trying to think of a play that could involve a wide range of characters and also give the opportunity to have a large cast. I was also interested in following on from last year’s summer production of ‘The Wind in the Willows’ where I had adapted my own version of the story from the original book and numerous film and TV adaptations and thought I could do the same with ‘Treasure Island’”.
So far, it has been a busy year in Drama full of productions and this will be the third that Mr Garrity has directed following on from the Junior Scholar Production of ‘A Christmas Carol’, the Year Nine and Ten productions of ‘Clue: High School Edition’ and finally ‘Treasure Island’, coincidently two of which have both been adapted by The Muppets!
Mr Garrity has thoroughly enjoyed working with our Years Seven and Eight pupils and, as always, has been impressed by their enthusiasm, confidence and positive attitude.
Josh Tipple, who plays ‘Captain Smollett’ commented, “This is my first production at RGS and I have loved being part of the cast and in this production because every rehearsal is enjoyable and I have learned lots of new techniques and styles of acting from Mr Garrity”.
Immy Raxter, who plays ‘Ben Gunn’ commented, “I am really enjoying being part of the production and I am loving every minute of it.”
‘Treasure Island’ will be performed in the RGS Performing Arts Centre for three nights, from Wednesday 19 June until Friday 21 June. Tickets will be available shortly.
