RGS Rugby 7s Goes from Strength to Strength
This term marked an exciting transition to Sevens Rugby with teams from all age groups showcasing passion, determination and sportsmanship. Across various competitions, our teams demonstrated resilience, skill, and a commitment to the fast-paced format of the game, culminating in an outstanding haul of five trophies.
Lower and Middle School Squads Standout Performances
The Under 12s commenced their Sevens journey with an impressive performance at the Bishop Vesey’s Grammar Tournament, securing the Shield. Their progression throughout the tournament demonstrated the depth of talent in this young Sevens squad, with strong teamwork and dynamic attacking play setting a solid foundation for the future.
The Middle School teams delivered exceptional performances across multiple tournaments. The Under 13s showcased their exciting, free-flowing rugby style at the Warwick tournament and then again at Rosslyn Park, where they won more matches than they lost. Their ability to adapt to the Sevens format was evident in their fast-paced attacking play and defensive resilience.
The Under 14s demonstrated their strength and ability, making it to Day two at Rosslyn Park after victories over Merchiston Castle and St Peter’s York. Despite defeating eventual group winners Trinity School, Croydon, the team missed out on further progression on points difference, evidencing the fine margins in Sevens Rugby.
Meanwhile, the Middle School teams continued their success in other competitions, securing multiple trophies:
- Plate Winners at Solihull School
- Cup Champions at Old Swinford Hospital School
- Warwick Tournament Cup Finalists, where they played out a thrilling 21-21 draw with Sedbergh, one of the country’s top Rugby schools.
Silverware in Senior Rugby
Building on a strong 15-a-side season, the Senior teams made a seamless transition to Sevens Rugby, claiming silverware in highly competitive tournaments. They lifted the Trophy at Collegiate School and the Shield at King’s School Worcester.
One of the highlights of the term was co-hosting ‘The Schools Championship 7s” (TSC7s) at Sixways Stadium, where the team gained invaluable experience playing against some of the best Rugby schools in the country. This exposure will undoubtedly serve them well in future competitions.
At Rosslyn Park, the Under 18 Boys competed in the Vase competition, securing two wins from three group matches. Despite their strong performances, they narrowly missed out on knockout qualification on points difference.
The Under 18 Girls continued their impressive growth in their fourth appearance at Rosslyn Park. They made significant progress, reaching Day two and finishing 5th in the Plate competition, just short of the semi-finals. Their development as a team highlights the strength of the Girls’ Rugby programme at RGS.
Building on a Season of Sevens Success
The Sevens season has provided all players with a wealth of experience, numerous memorable moments as a team and notable achievements. Across all age groups, the commitment and skill displayed have been outstanding, setting a strong platform for further growth and success in the years to come. As the RGS Rugby programme develops, the achievements of this term will serve as inspiration for future squads. We congratulate all Rugby Sevens squads for their impressive performances throughout the season.
