RGS Equestrians Compete in Prestigious Hickstead Event
At the start of the Half term break, RGS riders travelled to Hickstead to compete in the Schools Championships. Pupils Lily Smart, Hannah Darby and Lilianna Sprigg all competed.
This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Hurst College National Schools Jumping Championships which were first held in 1964. Since then, thousands of young riders have come to Hickstead each summer, hoping to qualify to jump in the world-famous International Arena. The National Championships for both junior and senior schools are open to individuals and teams of three or four riders from any school. Many top international riders have competed in the Hickstead Schools Championships, including Pippa Funnell and Robert Whitaker. Notable figures such as the Duchess of York, supermodel Jodie Kidd, and BBC presenter Clare Balding also had their early experiences of show jumping at this annual event.
Lily Smart performed exceptionally in dressage, finishing 3rd nationally. Lilianna Sprigg delivered a fantastic show jumping round, achieving an impressive 6th place nationally.
The girls also participated in the Eventer’s Challenge, a competition combining show jumping and arena cross-country fences with an optimum time and no style marks. The goal is to complete a clear round within the set time. The NSEA Eventers Challenge Championships take place on the prestigious turf of the All England Jumping Course at Hickstead. This competition is rapidly gaining popularity and includes challenging elements like water complexes, steps, and ditches.
Although they did not place in the Eventer’s Challenge, the girls had a wonderful time and gained valuable experience.
Well done to all the riders who participated!
