Psychology Students Explore Freud’s Legacy
On Thursday 9 May, Lower Sixth Psychology students travelled to London to visit the final home of Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, and his daughter Anna Freud, a pioneering child psychoanalyst. Students boarded the coach and arrived in good time, enjoying lunch in the house’s sunny gardens before exploring.
During the tour, students could visit Freud’s study and view his collection of artefacts. The main centrepiece was his famous psychoanalytical couch, which has come to represent the practice of psychoanalysis itself and is undoubtedly one of the most famous pieces of domestic furniture!
Students then regrouped for a lecture on treating Schizophrenia from a Freudian approach, which challenged our perceptions about understanding Schizophrenia and how the ‘abnormal’ might be ‘normal’.
The trip provided valuable insights into Sigmund Freud and Anna Freud’s careers and thought-provoking discussions about psychoanalysis and mental health.
