Northwick Manor Primary Pupils Shine at ‘Play in a Day’ Drama Outreach Event
Last Wednesday, the Performing Arts Centre (PAC) was transformed into a vibrant creative space as 90 Year Six Northwick Manor Primary School pupils participated in the exciting Drama Outreach event, ‘Play in a Day’. This unique initiative allowed pupils to immerse themselves in Drama, Singing, and Dance while building their creativity, confidence, and teamwork skills.
The day’s theme centred around the rainforest, aligning with Northwick Manor pupils’ current school topic. The play was specially written for the event by RGS Worcester’s Director of Drama, Mrs Jilly Witcomb, providing a bespoke, engaging narrative for pupils to explore.
The day began with a warm welcome from the RGS Drama team, led by Director of Drama, Mrs Jilly Witcomb. Guided by RGS Drama staff, the pupils rotated through a series of creative workshops: Mrs Jilly Witcomb led script work, Drama teacher Mr Jak Garrity taught singing, and Drama Performing Arts Assistant Frances Broadbent oversaw dance choreography. RGS technician Mr Simon Graeme provided expert technical support throughout the day.
Working in groups, the pupils learned acting techniques, explored their characters, and rehearsed scenes while also mastering songs and dances to bring their rainforest story to life. Every pupil played a role in the production, ensuring full participation and a collaborative effort.
After lunch in Main Hall, the pupils returned to the PAC for the day’s main challenge: combining all the elements of acting, singing, and dance—into a seamless final performance. With a strong sense of teamwork, the pupils refined their work and prepared for their moment in the spotlight.
A full audience of parents gathered in the PAC in the afternoon to watch the rainforest-themed play. The performance showcased the pupils’ incredible progress in just one day, highlighting their creativity, enthusiasm, and ability to work together—the captivating story, engaging songs, and vibrant choreography made for a memorable and inspiring show.
Mrs Jilly Witcomb said: “It was an absolute pleasure working with the Northwick pupils all day, and we were so impressed with their positive attitudes and enthusiasm for participating. It was also a fabulous opportunity to work with the Northwick teaching staff, who supported throughout the day.”
The Headmaster, John Pitt, congratulated the pupils for their performance and the amount they had achieved in a few hours at RGS. He thanked the Northwick staff for supporting the pupils and the RGS staff for providing the opportunity.
The ‘Play in a Day’ initiative reflects RGS Worcester’s commitment to Partnerships and Outreach within the community. By sharing its facilities and expertise, RGS Worcester provides valuable opportunities for local pupils to explore their creativity and build skills that will benefit them both in and outside the classroom. Events like this also demonstrate why RGS Worcester was named Independent School of the Year for Educational Partnerships.
