Modus Challenge Cup Celebrates Sportsmanship and Long-Standing Talent
The 17th Annual Modus Challenge Cup was an exhilarating and fiercely competitive event, highlighting exceptional athletic ability and sportsmanship from both RGS Worcester and King’s School Worcester. This year’s match showcased the players’ dedication, skill, and passion in a thrilling contest that kept spectators on the edge of their seats.
RGS Worcester made an impressive start, scoring a try within the opening two minutes. However, King’s Worcester responded strongly, securing a 17-7 lead by half time. The second half saw RGS fight back valiantly to edge ahead 19-17, but King’s ultimately clinched a hard-fought 29-19 victory with two late tries.
We warmly congratulate King’s School for their win and take immense pride in the outstanding effort shown by the RGS team. Although the final score was not in our favour, our players displayed remarkable determination, discipline, and teamwork, reflecting their thorough preparation and resilience.
It was especially rewarding to see so many long-standing RGS Worcester students representing the School so well. Joshua Griffiths, Harry Green, Noah Whitbread, Liam Chadwick, George Heywood, and Freddie Fletcher began their journeys at RGS The Grange and RGS Springfield, while Will Sutherland, Lucas Bray, Sammy Chance, Tom Bunyan, John Drysdale, Oscar Richardson, Oliver Fletcher, and Will Cartwright have been integral members of our Rugby community since joining RGS Worcester in Year Seven.
The match also offered the opportunity for Year Five pupils from The RGS Family of Schools a chance to play during half-time, while Year Seven pupils from RGS Worcester took on the role of ball boys.
We are very grateful to Guy Marson for once again sponsoring the fixture by Modus. Thank you also to Worcester Warriors player legend and former RGS pupil, Jonny Arr, for attending the match and awarding the trophy. Finally, thank you to Sixways Stadium for hosting the fixture again this year.
The event takes lots of organisation behind the scenes and Mrs Margaret Sturdy, Pastoral Secretary, has been instrumental in arranging this match with Sixways. In honour of her commitment, Mr Lewis, Head of Rugby, organised for a trophy with her name to be awarded each year to the RGS Player of the Match. This year Harry Heaton, Lower Sixth, earned this accolade and Mrs Sturdy presented him with the Cup which will be kept at School, and a smaller version for Harry to keep.
The Modus Challenge Cup continues to be a cherished tradition, offering students a valuable opportunity to compete in such a prestigious environment while building camaraderie and mutual respect between the two schools. This year’s event provided a thrilling experience for players, coaches, and spectators. Reflecting on the positives and lessons from this year’s competition, we look forward to next year’s fixture.
Well done to all involved!
