Lower Sixth Geographers Explore Devon’s Landscapes
Last week, 23 Lower Sixth Geography students travelled to the Field Studies Centre in Slapton, Devon, to gather data for their Non-Examined Assessment (NEA). Students explored Slapton Sands and the nearby town of Totnes, conducting research on infiltration rates in local woodlands, coastal processes and management along Start Bay, and assessing the environmental and social sustainability of Totnes. Although the weather forecast was unpredictable, the students were lucky to experience clear skies, albeit with very windy conditions. They made the most of the weather, demonstrating resilience and determination as they collected data for their individual assessments.
Mr Roberts led early morning runs along the beautiful Devon coastline, providing an energetic start to the day and a chance to appreciate the stunning surroundings of Slapton. The local village shop was also well utilised by all, becoming a popular stop for snacks and supplies. Walks to the local beach allowed the students to socialise and get to know each other better, creating a real sense of camaraderie throughout the trip. Students also got to sample ‘vegan food Wednesdays’ and tested their table tennis skills.
The students were hard-working and enthusiastic in their approach to data collection, as well as being excellent company throughout the trip. Impressively, the majority even managed to leave their rooms clean and tidy! With the data collection now complete, the Lower Sixth geographers will begin analysing the information they gathered for their NEA coursework. Best of luck to all students as they continue their hard work in preparation for their upcoming examinations.
