Judge Christopher Lester Inspires Future Legal Minds
RGS Worcester had the privilege of welcoming Judge Christopher Lester for a fascinating and comprehensive Careers Seminar on Careers in Law. The Seminar provided pupils with an invaluable opportunity to gain insight into the various paths within the legal profession, as Judge Lester shared his own journey, from early school experiences to becoming a full-time judge.
Judge Lester began by recounting his education and involvement in activities such as Hockey, Debating, and the school choir. He explained that these experiences developed essential skills like teamwork and public speaking, which later proved invaluable in his legal career. His interest in law was sparked during his participation in mock trials at school, stressing the importance of co-curricular activities in developing necessary skills for future careers.
He went on to discuss his academic path, pursuing a Law Degree at Durham University before becoming a solicitor, then transitioning to the role of a barrister, and eventually becoming a judge. Judge Lester provided a candid look into the challenges of securing a training contract and the necessity of standing out in a competitive field. He emphasised the importance of practical experience, sharing his diverse work across criminal law, employment law, and family law.
The Seminar also explored the differences between solicitors and barristers, with Judge Lester highlighting the distinct roles each plays in court. His experiences in the Crown Prosecution Service were equally insightful, as he shared stories from his 20-year career handling cases ranging from drink driving to terrorism.
Pupils were encouraged to explore the broad range of legal careers, from roles in universities and charities to positions in international practice. Judge Lester stressed the importance of communication, teamwork, and adaptability, advising pupils to seek work experience, be proactive, and remain resilient in the face of challenges.
The Seminar concluded with a Q&A session, where Judge Lester provided thoughtful responses on topics such as balancing work and personal life, the future of law, and the importance of finding a career aligned with one’s values and interests. His advice to aspiring lawyers was clear: develop essential skills, be open to opportunities, and pursue a career where you can make a meaningful impact.
