From Indoor Nets to Outdoor Triumphs: A Spring Season of Cricket Success
After a Winter of netting indoors, there was much excitement and anticipation for the beginning of the Cricket season. However, after such a wet Winter, Cricket outside looked somewhat out of the question. Astonishingly, in the first half of the Trinity Term, the RGS grounds staff managed to prepare over 50 pitches, for Boys’ and Girls’ Cricket fixtures in just six weeks, allowing for an incredibly successful start for all teams.
For the first time, the Girls’ Under 18 and Under 15 teams entered The Cricket Paper National 100 ball competitions and had success in the early rounds progressing to Round Two. Likewise, the Boys’ 1st XI in the National Schools T20 competition made it to Round Three. The standout team has been the Year Seven Boys’ team who are still unbeaten and have reached the Worcestershire Schools Cup Final which will take place a couple of weeks after the Half term break. Notably, there have been multiple individual successes across all teams, including half-centuries, five-wicket hauls and even some hat tricks.
The Boys’ 1st XI has lost to only one team this season so far and have beaten large all-boys’ schools Warwick and Bedford, as well as beating Bromsgrove School twice in two different formats. They play King’s School Worcester this weekend.
Alongside matches outdoors, we have had indoor Cricket as well. The Girls’ Under 15 team made it to the Lady Taverners Indoor Regional Finals held at Edgbaston Cricket Centre and put in some brilliant performances. They finished in fourth place, an achievement of which they should be very proud. After Half term, we are looking forward to fixtures against the MCC and RGS Newcastle before rounding off at RGS Guildford for the RGS Cricket Festival where the Boys’ 1st XI are looking to defend their title as champions in the annual festival.
Over the winter, pupils have benefitted from the 1:1 programme, alongside early morning and lunchtime sessions and have certainly showcased their talents and developments in the opening half of term and they should be proud of what they have achieved so far.
