Finlay and Isabella Orchestrate Musical Success
Year Nine pupils Finlay Hilton and Isabella Gabriel recently received the exciting news that they have both been accepted into the prestigious National Children’s Orchestra (NCO) Main Orchestra. Finlay playing the viola and Isabella playing bassoon re-auditioned this year after honing their talents in the younger training orchestra last year. They will now form part of the main ensemble, performing alongside some of the most gifted young musicians from across the UK.
Finlay shared how much this opportunity means to him, explaining that he is thrilled to play with talented peers from different parts of the country commenting: “I get to make new friends, enjoy sectional practices, and learn something new each time”.
Rehearsals with the Main Orchestra will take place during the Easter holidays next year, where Finlay and Isabella will spend a week immersed in music, culminating in a concert performance. This schedule will continue with a summer rehearsal session and another grand performance, followed by a special weekend in London during Christmas for an NCO concert.
Since joining the NCO at age eleven, Finlay has embraced the opportunities for growth and connection that the orchestra offers. His first experience was as part of the Under 12s, marking his introduction to overnight music projects, and he continued with enthusiasm into the Under 13s. Reflecting on his journey with the National Orchestra, Finlay encourages others to follow their passions saying: “If you find something you love and enjoy, don’t give up, as you can change the world.”
Isabella expressed her excitement about being selected for NCO’s Main Orchestra this year, noting that she feels privileged to be part of such an accomplished group. She explained that the audition process was highly competitive, with musicians her age from all over the country vying for a spot.
Isabella auditioned during the summer holidays and played two contrasting pieces accompanied by her RGS piano teacher, Mrs Jordan. Reflecting on the experience, Isabella shared, “I’m really looking forward to tackling more challenging and exciting pieces this year, as well as reconnecting with my friends during the three concerts we’ll be performing next year.”
Congratulations to Finlay and Isabella on this remarkable accomplishment. We look forward to seeing the impact of their talents on the NCO stage!
