Exploring Careers in Environmental Sustainability
Yesterday, we had the privilege of welcoming Dudley Saunders and Charlie Macknight from Sol Environment to lead a Careers Seminar on Environmental careers.
Sol Environment is an independent consultancy specialising in environmental and sustainability solutions. The Seminar provided pupils with an inspiring glimpse into the opportunities and challenges of environmental careers, demonstrating how innovation and expertise can drive sustainability.
Sol Environment focuses on renewable energy and the low-carbon sector, offering services that range from environmental planning and permitting to corporate ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance ) strategy and legal compliance. Dudley Saunders, Environmental Planning Lead, and Charlie Macknight, Senior Sustainability Consultant, shared their personal career journeys and the impactful work they undertake in their roles.
Dudley discussed his transition from a Master’s in Environmental Planning to tackling complex projects, such as planning applications for a green gas facility and a refinery. He highlighted the importance of aligning developments with environmental policies, engaging with local communities, and addressing environmental concerns through meticulous planning.
Charlie spoke about his shift from finance to sustainability, underlining the importance of versatility and industry experience. He detailed his work in energy modelling, carbon assessments, and drafting methodologies for carbon credit projects, demonstrating the critical role ESG policies play in shaping sustainable business practices.
Both speakers underscored the dynamic and rewarding nature of environmental careers, from problem-solving and project management to navigating sustainability challenges. They encouraged pupils to seek work placements, embrace a broad skill set, and pursue their ambitions with persistence and passion.
The Seminar left pupils inspired to explore the many avenues within the environmental sector and consider how they can contribute to a more sustainable future. We sincerely thank Dudley, Charlie, and Sol Environment for sharing their expertise and enthusiasm.
