Exciting Start to the Debating Season for RGS Worcester
Last Saturday, the Debating season commenced with the competitive regional round of The Cambridge Schools’ Debating Competition.
Four RGS Worcester teams headed down to Bristol for the Midlands and South-West Round of the competition. Halfway through the competition, after two debates on academic streaming and computational creativity, things were looking good with Lower Sixth students Isabelle Jones and Joseph Kington in first place on the league table. With only three final places up for grabs, this would be an exciting second half!
Debates followed on whether fans should own their sports teams and on alternative media. Unfortunately, in spite of all of our teams winning at least one of their debates, RGS Worcester eventually came fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh in the competition – frustratingly close to qualification but not quite there. Our individual speakers also did well with the Society’s Presidents, Upper Sixth students Annabelle Howarth and Katherine McCabe, judged in equal third place as top speakers and Hannah Agoston and Joseph Kington also in the top ten.
So, the Society dusts itself down, and we go again. This weekend, Senior debaters are in action again with our new Debating Co-ordinator and Teacher of History, Mr Pardoe‑Davies, at the University of Nottingham competition and then on Monday, it is the turn of The Oxford Schools’ Midlands Regional Round, hosted at RGS Worcester.
We wish all our debaters good luck!
