Emily and Issy Shine in National and International Fencing Arenas
June has been an exciting month for fencers Emily De Bono and Issy Pottinger, who have demonstrated their skills and determination on national and international levels.
From Emily’s debut at an international competition in Switzerland to Issy’s strong performance at a national ranking event in London, these promising fencers have demonstrated exceptional potential and resilience. Their recent achievements highlight their individual growth and the bright future of fencing within the England squad.
On Sunday, 2 June, Emily De Bono participated in her first international Fencing competition. She travelled to Lausanne, Switzerland, as part of the England squad for the annual Under 14 Epée event.
Emily was one of ten fencers selected for the England Girls’ squad following a long season of national competitions. She had a successful season, culminating in a strong performance at the British Youth Championships national finals, held in Sheffield in May, where she finished 7th.
The event in Lausanne featured fencers from six countries and was dominated by a strong Italian contingent. Emily won one match in her pool and narrowly missed winning a second. She lost 6-2 in the round of 62 and finished 34th overall. This was an excellent first experience in international competition, and we look forward to her next appearance on the international stage.
In other impressive Fencing achievements, on Saturday, 22 June, Issy Pottinger competed at the Leon Paul Centre in London in the first British Cadet Ranking Competition of the new season. This Under 17 national ranking competition, which marks the beginning of the race for international selection, was well attended.
Izzy began the season ranked 33rd, based on points carried over from last year. In the first round of pools, she won two and lost two. In the second round, she won three and lost one. In the third round, she won four and lost three. These results seeded her 9th, placing her in the second division to compete for 9th to 16th place.
Izzy won her first elimination bout 15-13, her second 15-13, but lost her third 15-9, finishing 10th on the day. Achieving 10th place in a national ranking competition when starting the season ranked 33rd is a fantastic achievement.
Congratulations to both Emily and Issy. We wish them continued success and look forward to more exciting updates.
