RGS Celebrates European Week of Languages
Every year on 26 September, schools across Europe come together to celebrate the European Day of Languages, highlighting the 225 languages spoken across the continent. At RGS Worcester, we extend this celebration into a week-long festival of language and culture!
Throughout the week, pupils immersed themselves in a wide range of language-themed activities. From House Pétanque matches to engaging Italian lessons in our Italian Club, our pupils enthusiastically explored the wonders of language learning. A highlight of the week was the ‘La Dolce Vita’ taster session, where pupils had the opportunity to indulge in the Italian way of life, sampling sweet treats that captured the essence of Italy.
In Years Eight and Nine, pupils took on the challenge of becoming a spy for GCHQ by participating in a translation activity during their language lessons. This exciting task tested their linguistic skills and gave them a taste of real-world language application.
During Form Time, pupils played games celebrating different languages and cultures, such as Crazy Idioms and Where Am I? In Crazy Idioms, pupils guessed the figurative meaning behind idioms that had been literally translated from other languages. The celebration also extended to lunches, where themed meals showcased European cuisine. From rich French cassoulet and classic Italian Bolognese to hearty German Bockwurst, the kitchen was transformed into a culinary journey across Europe.
At RGS Worcester, we are passionate about developing a love for languages in our pupils. European Day of Languages is a reminder of our commitment to embracing diversity and celebrating the vibrant mosaic of cultures and languages that enrich our world.
Thank you to all our pupils and staff for making this week a wonderful celebration of linguistic and cultural diversity!
