RGS ‘Allstars’ host ‘Hockey for Heroes’
Last month, RGS Worcester hosted a Hockey event to support ‘Hockey for Heroes’ – a national charity which aims to use Hockey to promote and raise funds for Help for Heroes charities. RGS Head of Hockey, Miss Leanne Bennett is part of the squad for ‘Hockey for Heroes’ and said: “Recent fundraising efforts, tours and exhibition events have been affected by Covid-19, so this was a lovely opportunity for the squad finally to get back together, especially in our newly sponsored STX kit.”
Following the success of the RGS Alumnae game at the start of the season, Miss Bennett asked Alumnae Captain, Sophie Thompson to organise an ‘RGS Allstars’ team to play against the ‘Heroes’. Sophie did an excellent job of putting together a talented squad of current and former RGS pupils.
The match started evenly with the experience of the ‘Hockey for Heroes’ players on show to take a 2-0 lead into half time. However, the athletic and determined ‘RGS Allstars’ team soon gained momentum in the second half with goals from National League players Lottie Atkinson, Sophie Thompson and Alice Atkinson. Wales Under 18 player, Amelia Lane also found the net for the RGS team and, although the ‘Hockey for Heroes’ squad adapted their tactics and structure, the talent of the ‘RGS Allstars’ side shone through.
It was lovely to see current and former pupils, who still have a love and passion for the game, come together to play while also fundraising for these important charities.
