Mammoth Marathon Challenge for Two RGS Teachers
Director of Innovation, Mr John Jones and Academic Admissions Manager, Mrs Cia Swingler will both be running in this year’s London Marathon on Sunday 23 April.
Mr Jones is running the marathon for the Worcester Snoezelen Project, a leisure therapy centre offering a range of person-centred multisensory activities that empower, bring joy, and help members make choices and communicate through alternative means.
The term ‘Snoezelen’ was coined in the 1970s by two Dutch therapists for sensory based therapy for people with autism and other disabilities. Founded in 1993, Worcester Snoezelen has grown into a well-established charitable organisation with fourteen members of staff and many visitors through its doors each week. Over the last three decades, the Centre has had a profound impact on hundreds of visitors, including those with disabilities and additional needs, as well as families and carers.
Mrs Swingler is running the marathon to raise funds for Spinal Research, inspired by her experiences with both her husband and a close friend who have both benefited from spinal surgery.
Spinal Research is the UK’s leading charity funding medical research around the world to develop effective treatments for paralysis caused by spinal cord injury. Every year 1,000 people in the UK and Ireland are paralysed following an injury to their spinal cord. The Charity receives no government funding and relies entirely on the support of the public to raise funds for their research. Through the efforts of supporters, Spinal Research has funded innovative medical research that has achieved several ground-breaking changes in the field.
