Literature lies at the heart of RGS
The RGS Worcester Library is at the heart of the School and is a welcoming and quiet space for pupils to read and study throughout the day. It is where you will also meet our friendly and knowledgeable Library staff, Mrs Barnes and Mrs Alldridge.
Officially re-opened in 2001 by the former Poet Laureate Andrew Motion, the Library is also the venue for the School’s many Reading Clubs including the Literary Society and the Lower School and Middle School Book Club, members of which meet at lunchtime each week to discuss their favourite books, characters and to share the joy of reading.
Displays in the Library highlight events, literary festivals and national celebrations. To mark the beginning of Advent this year, the Library has even installed a ‘Book returns sleigh’ and some rather literary Christmas trees!
The Library also enjoyed ‘New Book November’ last month, adding to, and refreshing the already extensive collection of books. The fiction selection is varied and chosen to explore themes, subjects and topics which will spark interest and enjoyment, and non-fiction is carefully selected to support pupils’ academic goals.
Pupils are actively encouraged to read at RGS, often working toward incentives such as the Lower School Reading Passport. During December, the RGS Library is challenging pupils by asking: ‘Who’s on the naughty list?’, an invitation to pupils to discover the characters within the pages of books on the Library shelves, who are guaranteed to find coal in their stocking!
