Investigating Police Careers
Before the Christmas holiday, RGS Worcester welcomed representatives from West Mercia Police to talk to pupils about careers in the Police and the routes to enter Policing.
The Officers explained to the pupils attending the talk that a career in the police can be very rewarding, allowing people to make a real difference in the community, reducing crime and making life safer for the public. A career in the Police also offers good opportunities for career progression and the chance to rise through the ranks. However, it is also one of the most challenging careers you can choose, being physically, mentally and emotionally demanding.
The various routes into Policing were presented including a three-year Apprenticeship, which lets you earn while you learn, whilst some forces are still offering ‘Traditional Entry’ too. There are also graduate entry routes available with a Degree in Professional Policing and two-year work-based Degree Holder and Detective Degree Holder Entry programmes which both lead to a graduate diploma in Professional Policing Practice.
In addition to the academic requirements, the need to have strong morals and to be a good communicator were also highlighted as core skills, as was the fact that a Policing career is not a 9-5 job with the need to be ‘always on duty’ – even when not at work! Pupils were fully engaged by the presentation and the opportunities offered by a career in the Police and they asked a wide range of interesting questions.
We would like to thank both representatives from West Mercia Police for their contribution and we look forward to the many Careers seminars and the Careers EXPO this term.
