House Events at Home: Winners Revealed!
The House challenges this term have taken on a slightly different approach due to pupils participating from home. However, working remotely has not deterred pupils’ determination to secure valuable points for their Houses. With new and exciting challenges set such as the House Scrap Heap Challenge, entries have shown that RGS pupils are continuing to keep busy and rise to the challenge by innovating, creating, and having fun. Please enjoy the summary below of the House challenges and final results.
Scrap Heap Challenge
Due to the ‘lockdown’ and the difficulties in running the House Model-making and Lego Building contests this term, an alternative event was introduced – The House Scrap Heap Challenge! This event challenged participants to build an eco-friendly shelter that could be used for a refugee or homeless person.
Although not everyone stuck to the brief, there were some very creative builds. A few were built to full scale, whilst others were scaled down somewhat. Mr Howard, our Design and Technology judge, was impressed by the resourcefulness and creativity of the entries. Pupils were scored on creativity and innovation, appropriateness to the task, clarity of video introduction and their use of recyclable materials.
Josefina Round of Ottley achieved the highest individual score and should be commended for her highly creative build, which even included a working rainwater recycling unit. Achieving joint Second with their individual scores and representing Whiteladies were Becca Gardner and Mr Scanlon (with the help of his daughter), who both created some very resourceful builds. Well done and thank you to all who entered and were involved.
With collective points for each House added together, the overall results are as follows:
Fourth place – Elgar
Third place – Ottley
Second place – Whiteladies
First place – Wylde

‘The Show Must Go On’ – House Music Competition moves online
The House Music Competition returned this year and went ‘online’. The brief was a cover of a ’90s music track, with the theme of ‘lockdown’. Our pupils certainly rose to the challenge! With two Year group categories open for entries, we received some truly incredible submissions, showcasing not only the musical performing talents of those involved but their skills as musical arrangers, collaborators, sound engineers and filmmakers. Songs included covers of Celine Dion’s, All by myself, TLC’s No Scrubs and The Show Must Go On by Queen.
The results are as follows:
Juniors
Fourth place – Ottley
Third place – Elgar
Second place – Whiteladies
First place – Wylde
Seniors
Joint Third place – Elgar, Ottley
Joint First place – Whiteladies, Wylde
We will be sharing the fabulous House Music Competition entries on the Music Department’s Twitter – @RGSWMusic, showcasing entries that include some incredible sign language, creative use of PPE, performances from obscure places and a couple of special appearances from the teachers!
