Hockey Season Begins with Skill, Determination, and Alumni Inspiration
The RGS Worcester Hockey season is off to an exciting start. The Senior Hockey players started with a pre-season training session on 29 August, followed by a triangular tournament hosted at the International Hockey Centre on Wednesday 6 September.
RGS welcomed RGS Newcastle for the second consecutive year to compete in the RGS Cup along with Hereford Cathedral School. The 1st XI gained valuable experience against RGS Newcastle who were a talented side and were victorious against Hereford Cathedral School, thanks to goals from Upper Sixth players Lani Zulkiplee and Amy Brinkley.
A mixed Senior team participated in a tournament at Malvern College on 8 September, with Year Eleven players stepping up due to Lower Sixth Induction back at School.
The Senior squad wrapped up the pre-season week with the annual fixture against the RGS Alumnae team. It was a special occasion for which former players returned to share their experiences and emphasise the positive impact of RGS Hockey on their lives.
While the Seniors were busy, other age groups also had training sessions, including an indoor session with new Hockey coaches Mr Sekula and Mr Gerrish, who will make a positive contribution to RGS Hockey development.
RGS Worcester was well represented at the England Hockey Talent Academy invitational trial sessions over recent weeks. Coached by Mr Sekula and managed by Head of Hockey, Mrs Bennett-Howells, we already have Teyah Farmer and Eden Williamson re-selected into this Regional squad for the upcoming season and we look forward to hearing if we have more boys and girls selected into the Talent Academy.
At County level, a number of RGS pupils have attended trails at Under 13, Under 15 and Under 17 level, with selection to be announced over the coming weeks.
The start of the Hockey season has been marked by enthusiasm, skill development, and promising performances across all age groups, setting a positive tone for the rest of the season. We hope to see an impressive performance out on the pitch at the annual Severn Shield Tournament against King’s School Worcester on 11 October, to which all spectators are welcome.
