Geography Fieldwork Adventure at Carding Mill Valley
On Monday, 70 Year Ten GCSE Geography pupils headed to Carding Mill Valley in Shropshire, for the first of two fieldwork days. Unusually for Geography fieldwork the sun shone and it was a pleasant change to worry about sun cream and shade rather than staying warm and in waterproofs!
The pupils demonstrated tremendous enthusiasm throughout the trip. Despite the riverbed being remarkably dry, even following the recent storms, the pupils successfully gathered valuable data on the river’s width, depth, bed load, and velocity. This fieldwork exercise provided an excellent opportunity for them to reinforce their understanding of Geography theory, particularly in relation to the Rivers Unit they have been studying. They were able to observe fascinating features such as Interlocking spurs, waterfalls, and changes in the bedload.
The education staff at the National Trust and various members of the public commented positively about the pupils’ attitude and general demeanour which is always appreciated by the Geography department – well done, everyone.
