Front Row: Senior Girls Tackle Rugby
Rugby players were pleased to take the field this week, after a 14-month absence. We were also delighted to see the first ever RGS Worcester Girls Under 18 Rugby team enjoy a competitive fixture against Hereford Sixth Form College.
This moment has been long awaited, with Girls’ Rugby first introduced at RGS two years’ ago but then unfortunately delayed by restrictions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Head of Rugby, Mr Robert Lewis commented “With just five Rugby training sessions taking place in the Trinity term, the girls have been outstanding. Week-on-week their understanding and confidence playing Rugby has grown, which has been a pleasure to witness and coach. The girls have demonstrated a strong willingness to learn and have set high standards for themselves, with Lucy Ball, who will lead the squad for the fixture, being at the forefront. There has been terrific engagement from the girls with a high number wanting to train each week. This is the start of an exciting journey for Girls’ Rugby at RGS, with the ultimate goal being to represent the School at the Rosslyn Park National Schools Sevens tournament in March 2022.”
Headmaster, John Pitt said: “I was delighted to see our girls playing a full Rugby fixture this week. Given all the success of the women’s national Rugby team, the girls should be inspired in this sport, and I know they are making the most of expert coaching from our Head of Rugby, Mr Robert Lewis. I am very pleased we can offer Rugby for girls, alongside so many other sports and opportunities at RGS.”
