From Training Nets to County Trials: RGS Cricketers Shine
Over the course of last Trinity term and the Michaelmas term, RGS Cricket saw increased attendance with nearly 200 pupils regularly attending indoor and outdoor training. There has been significant growth across all Boys’ Year groups and increased participation in the Girls’ programme.
During the Trinity term, the Girls’ programme included playing 48 matches, predominantly featuring Hardball Cricket. The players enjoyed a successful season across the Year groups with an impressive win ratio of 64%. The Michaelmas term saw Tom Savage Hall filled with four full lanes of girls training in sessions held every week. The girls’ enthusiasm and skills have translated into numerous trials for County teams, a testament to the girls’ dedication and love for the game.
The Boys’ programme has witnessed remarkable growth across all Year groups, particularly in Years Eight and Nine. A select group of younger boys has been invited to join Senior training sessions, providing them with a unique opportunity to elevate their skills. 30 Year Seven boys are regular attendees at the weekly morning and lunchtime clubs, honing their cricketing skills.
Senior boys and girls have enjoyed both their indoor group training and have also accessed tailored 1-1 weekly sessions with our Cricket professionals, often during their ‘free’ periods in the Sixth Form. This tailored approach aims to enhance individual skills by working on technique for batting and bowling specific to each player.
The Cricket culture at RGS Worcester has evolved to encompass early morning, lunchtime, and after-school sessions, running seamlessly from Monday to Friday. This extensive training programme has played a pivotal role in shaping well-rounded players who not only understand the nuances of the game but also embody the spirit of sportsmanship.
We can now eagerly anticipate seeing these young players continue to shine both on and off the Cricket field at RGS and at County Cricket level where we now have 20 RGS pupils playing for Worcestershire.
