Football Focus at RGS
There was much excitement and anticipation at the start of the Football season with the introduction of a two-term model for performance level Football. The model gives the opportunity for greater focus and development of team strategies against other more established two-term Football schools.
So far, we have fielded Under 18A and B teams and have pitted our wits against Malvern, Clifton, Marlborough, Wrekin and Shrewsbury colleges and schools. These matches have given us a good indication of our current standing. We have been very competitive, adopting a more counter attacking style of play when in possession and applying a successful high pressing game.
In the first half of the Lent term, the Senior teams have had one of the strongest fixtures schedules in the Midlands and South West and our progression and success have continued across all teams and age groups. The 1st XI in particular has performed admirably against Malvern, Bristol Grammar, Princethorpe and latterly Monmouth.
Following these fixtures, the much-anticipated Football Challenge Cup will be played against King’s School at Sixways Stadium, on Tuesday 27 February. This annual event is very much one of the sporting highlights of the School calendar, providing an opportunity for both teams to showcase their skills on the pitch.
Head of Football, Mr Gary Leeds, said: “I hope the Challenge Cup match creates its share of drama, I hope all players, parents and spectators enjoy the event. He goes on to emphasise, though, that the match is one fixture in what is now a long two-term season, “We also look forward to fixtures against Wycliffe College, Pate’s Grammar School and Cheltenham College.”
We look forward to the fixtures and continued success for the RGS Football teams.
