‘Filling in the Gaps’: A Gappie’s Life at RGS
Former RGS pupils, Lottie Jones and Alex Owen, have been back at RGS this year, gaining experience working in School during their Gap Year. We caught up with them to find out more about their work and their experience of returning to RGS in positions of responsibility.
Lottie Jones
“I left RGS Worcester as a pupil last summer and always planned taking a ‘Gap Year’ before starting university in 2021. I had lots of plans, including a job as a chalet host during a Ski season in the French Alps, which was sadly cancelled due to Covid-19.
Working at RGS has been amazing. I have been involved in so many different projects, from helping out on Reception, writing the weekly bulletins, making films for the School and assisting in the Lower School. Last term, I really enjoyed touring prospective parents and children around the School, showing them what RGS has to offer and how much I loved being a pupil here!
In September I am going to The University of Nottingham to study Philosophy and Psychology, which I am so excited about and which, hopefully, will be a somewhat normal uni experience. After university, I definitely intend to attempt a Ski season in the French Alps as it’s been a dream of mine to live and work there. After that, I am not sure what the future holds for me long-term but being a Secondary School Teacher is definitely on the cards because of how enjoyable my time has been here, not only working but also as a pupil at RGS.”
Alex Owen
“It has been a privilege to come back to RGS during my ‘Gap Year’. From giving tours of the School to prospective pupils, to helping out with the mass Covid-19 testing and everything in between, I’ve certainly been kept busy over the past few months! As well as working at the Senior School, I have been working at RGS The Grange, helping out with After School Care – not something I had previously envisaged, but which I have since found very rewarding. I’ve also been lucky enough to have the chance to work with the Debating Society, one of my passions when I was a pupil here. Assisting to create the new ‘Virtual Tour’ school film stands out as a highlight.
Last term I worked on my application to university and am planning on going to study History and Politics next year. Before this, I intend on gaining some experience in the world of politics and current affairs, as far as the current situation allows. I don’t have a set career path as yet, but my time working at RGS has certainly opened my eyes to the world of education in the future.
Working at RGS has taught me a number of different skills to add to those already developed as a pupil here, and which I am sure will stand me in good stead for the future. It has been a welcome introduction to the ‘world of work’ and I have enjoyed the chance to experience the increase in responsibility that has come with this. Coming back to RGS during my ‘Gap Year’ has been an experience which I have found enjoyable throughout.”
