Excitement For DIY Theatre Company’s ‘Private Peaceful’ Production
The RGS DIY Theatre Company are busy preparing for their next production, ‘Private Peaceful’. Adapted from Michael Morpurgo’s novel, the poignant and very relevant play, is set amidst the First World War and tells the story of a young soldier, looking back on his childhood life in the countryside of Devon.
Lower Sixth student Olivia, who plays the role of Mother, explains: “DIY productions have always been a demonstration of unity and talent amongst pupils from a range of Year groups, and these close relationships that form through rehearsals is something I look forward to every year. The rehearsal process of Private Peaceful has been at times theatrically challenging, with intense moments of physical theatre when recreating life in the trenches. Uplifting and inspirational, Private Peaceful is one of my favourite productions at RGS so far.”

Director of Drama, Mrs Jilly Witcomb, said: “I am delighted that DIY theatre has come together once again as a Company to perform in the Godfrey Brown Theatre and this year, we have the largest number of Drama Scholars and cast members involved to date. Senior Scholars have been superb in their support and leadership of our younger members as well as taking on production and acting roles.”
Headmaster, John Pitt, added: “The DIY Theatre Company is a unique opportunity for our Drama students to learn how to stage a production in all of its aspects. They have even had to organise the Headmaster to contribute to the programme amongst the many other tasks. We all look forward to seeing the final production.”
Private Peaceful will be performed at the Schools’ Performing Arts Centre 23 – 25 March 2022 at 6.30pm. Tickets cost £7.00 and are available from DIYboxoffice@rgsw.org.uk.
