Duke of Edinburgh Award – Silver expedition
Over three days this week, a group of 24 Year Eleven pupils completed their Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award qualifying expedition in the Malvern Hills. The expedition this year was slightly different due to Covid-19 restrictions, with the groups not camping overnight, but still able to practice their camp craft skills in a campsite just north of Ledbury.
In total, each team walked between 50 to 55km, climbing the Malvern Hills in challenging conditions, especially on Sunday where low clouds made navigation testing. Fortunately, the weather cleared on the final day, allowing the teams to enjoy the sunshine and some amazing views over Herefordshire!
We were really impressed by all five teams who demonstrated resilience and teamwork; walking through overgrown paths, dealing with challenging navigation and remaining positive throughout.
As part of the expedition section, the DofE Award also requires pupils to complete an aim during the expedition. This year, the group decided to be creative. Some groups put together a photo diary, others attempted to draw something whilst walking using their Strava App and another made their own version of ‘Where’s Wally’!
Well done to all the pupils who participated. I would also like to express my thanks to members of staff who helped run this expedition safely, as well as Warren Oak Scout Campsite, the Marlbank Inn and Crumpton Hill Farm Shop.
