Double Fencing Success at West Midlands Championships
On Saturday 25 February Lucas Hancock competed in the West Midlands Senior (Adult) Fencing championships at Tudor Grange in Solihull.
Lucas fenced well all day in this tough Épée event, winning two out of his four bouts at the pool stage. The event was very competitive and, despite winning two bouts, he was seeded 5th for the knock-out stages. However, Lucas received a bye through the last sixteen, moving straight through to the quarter-final stage.
In the quarter-finals, Lucas defeated the number four seed (15-9) before losing in the semi-final (15-8), to the eventual winner, and eight-time champion, Tomas Kazik.
Lucas was placed 3rd overall, winning a Bronze medal and qualification for the 2023 GB Cup competition.
On Sunday 26 February, Issy Pottinger also competed at the same venue to fence in the West Midlands Age Group Foil Championships, fencing in the Under 14 Girls Foil.
Issy had a successful pool stage only losing one of her four fights, seeding her 4th for the knock-out stage. Much like Lucas, she had a bye through the last sixteen and won her last eight fight (15-6), before losing the semi-final to the eventual winner, and an England International, 15-5.
Issy also achieved third place and won the Bronze medal, and qualification for the 2023 British Youth Championships National Finals.
Well done to both Lucas and Issy. We wish you both every success in these national competitions. Many congratulations!
