COP26: RGS Worcester really is Green
This term, members of the Environment Committee have been stepping up activity to help inspire RGS Worcester to become a greener, and more sustainable school environment. With events launched alongside COP26, the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference, various activities have been experienced around school, exploring different topics and areas of discussion, and suggesting ways to help tackle environmental issues.
Week one saw a focus on litter, waste and recycling, with a launch of RGS Worcester’s pen and crisp packet recycling scheme, alongside the Environment Committee encouraging the collection of Royal British Legion poppies for recycling following Remembrance Day. Information was also cascaded about the impact of litter on ecosystems and choosing reusable items over disposable ones is a far better option for the planet.
Week two saw a focus on ‘Fast Fashion’, with the RGS Textiles Department collaborating in a display of pupils’ work, showcasing repurposed fabrics to create stunning clothing designs. The week concluded with ‘flash-mob’ on Headmaster’s Walk at lunchtime, challenging pupils and staff to consider ‘needs’ rather than ‘wants’ when buying clothes, the positive impact of choosing second-hand, and encouraging ways to extend the life of clothing through careful washing and repairing as well as careful disposing.

Week three focussed on habitat loss and biodiversity, with the Environment Committee sharing stark facts about the loss of biodiversity in the UK and some practical steps we can all take to help protect and preserve the natural environment.
These themed weeks are in addition to the School celebrating Green Jumper Day, with pupils donning an item of warm, green clothing in addition to (rather than instead of) their normal uniform, to raise awareness of climate change as well as the School’s Christmas trees being decorated this year with plastic-free decorations, made by pupils and incorporating environmental pledges.
Headmaster, John Pitt said: “Thank you to the members of the Environment Committee who have provided the School community with very creative approaches to improving the environment and addressing this crucial issue which is a real focus for us all. While we have committed to a significant amount of work to aid sustainability at RGS, such as improving insulation in our older buildings and installing the solar panels on the Design Centre, there is always more to do if we are to make a real difference. It is clear our pupils have many ideas and much enthusiasm for our school to lead the way and we look forward to RGS becoming a greener environment for all. Many thanks to our Environmental Officers, Mrs Kate Hyndman and Miss Becky Briggs for their commitment and to the pupils for their ideas and engagement.“
