Autumn Concert Showcases Outstanding Musical Talent at RGS Worcester
RGS Worcester saw the first major concert of this academic year take place on the evening of Wednesday 9 November. Playing to a packed Perrins Hall, the concert began with the School Orchestra playing ‘A Whole Lot of Symphony Themes’, a medley of timeless tunes from some of the most well-known symphonies in the orchestral repertoire, and Leroy Anderson’s light and colourful ‘Blue Tango’.
The Wind Band, made up of pupils from Years Seven to Year Ten, performed Michael Oare’s ‘Alpine Adventure’, a musical depiction of a dangerous Alpine skiing event, and Taylor Swift’s pop song ‘Shake It Off’, before the Intermediate Strings presented ‘Swing Low Sweet Chariot’ and a spirited piece by Peter Wilson called ‘Carnival’, complete with foot stamps and a shouted ‘Hoi’ at the end.
The second half of the concert was devoted to choral music. Junior Choir, comprising over 60 Year Seven and Eight pupils, sang two contrasting pieces: Jenny Mahler’s evocative ‘Come Alive’ and American Authors’ indie-pop hit ‘Best Day of My Life’. The Chamber Choir quietened the mood with Mozart’s beautiful ‘Ave Verum Corpus’ and Frank Ticheli’s haunting ‘Earth Song’ before the stage was filled with over 100 members of the Senior Choir to first perform Otis Redding’s ‘Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay’.
The concert ended with a moving performance of ‘Fix You’ in a glorious arrangement by Jonathan Wikeley, complete with drums and electric guitar to add real power to this Coldplay classic.
With around 180 students performing, the concert was a celebration of music from our whole School community, with pupils in Year Seven sitting alongside and sharing the stage with Sixth Form students. One of the youngest pupils involved, Finlay Hilton in Year Seven, said of the concert: “I thought it was exciting and fun because we all got together to play and sing. I really enjoy playing and singing and my favourite piece last night was the orchestra’s first piece because of all the symphony themes it included. It was very crazy to have Perrins so full with the audience!”
We congratulate all, both students and staff, who performed and look forward to more high-quality music-making in this musically packed Half term.
