Are You Ready for the Challenge? Mathematics Challenge Success
A large number of Middle School pupils across Years Nine, Ten and Eleven took part in the annual Intermediate Mathematics Challenge before Half term. The Intermediate Mathematics Challenge is a 60-minute, multiple-choice Challenge that encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems. The problems on the Intermediate Mathematical Challenge are designed to make students think while still being accessible, yet challenge those with more experience.
Pupils demonstrated excellent problem-solving skills and we were very pleased to see that over 70 pupils achieved certificates in recognition of their accomplishments, with 13 gaining the highest ‘Gold’ awards.
Top performer in the Intermediate Maths Challenge was Year Nine pupil Sihan Fu who scored an impressive 107 out of a possible 135 marks! This year the pupil certificates were signed by none other than ex-RGS staff member Howard Groves MBE (1982-2011) who is the chair of the problem setting committee.
Here is one of the puzzles from this year’s paper, see if you can work out the answer!
Well done to all 70 pupils who took part in the Intermediate Maths Challenge!
