A Comedic Journey to the Underworld with RGS Senior Scholars
Rehearsals are underway for the next RGS theatre production performed by the Senior Drama Scholars. In March, ‘The Frogs’ will be performed in the Performing Arts Centre for two nights by pupils from Year Eleven to the Upper Sixth.
First performed in 405 BC at the Lenaia festival in Athens, ‘The Frogs’ is a comedic play that satirises the state of the Athenian theatre and society of its time. The plot revolves around the Greek god Dionysus, who, distressed by the decline in the quality of contemporary Athenian drama, decides to journey to the underworld to bring back the deceased playwright Euripides. Dionysus is accompanied by his slave Xanthias, and the two encounter various challenges and comedic situations on their journey.
Director of Drama, Mrs Jilly Witcomb commented: “We are finally performing a comedy! The choice of the genre was requested by the Scholars and what better piece to do than a play from the birthplace of theatre – Ancient Greece! It is absolutely crazy and we are really enjoying rehearsals and mashing up what Aristophanes intended with contemporary music, street dancing frogs, hippie initiates and a salute to Star Wars / The Mandalorian! We hope this has sparked your interest enough to come and have an enjoyable evening with our performers!”
We look forward to the performances of ‘Frogs’ on 14 and 15 of March and very much hope that you will be able to join us.
