A ‘Behind the Scenes’ Special: Careers in Television Production
Last Thursday, we had the pleasure of welcoming back alumnus Tom Tudgay (Class of 2002-2009) to RGS Worcester. Tom led the first Careers Seminar of the Michaelmas term, sharing his insights and experiences in television sports production.
During the Seminar, Tom showcased recent football footage he had produced from a Burnley vs. Manchester United match, created in collaboration with his production team. He engaged with pupils, asking them to guess how many people were involved in producing a 15 minute clip. Surprisingly, the answer was a staggering 136 individuals, including roles like wardrobe, makeup, cameramen, drone operators, technical experts, and editors. Tom emphasised the journalistic and editorial thought that goes into each clip, as well as the meticulous planning and scheduling.
One highlight of the Seminar was the camera map, which illustrated the placement of each camera around the pitch and explained the intricate process of switching between camera shots during live and fast-paced coverage. Tom also emphasised that there is no need to have a fixed career path in television production, given the diverse roles and abundant job opportunities available.
After leaving RGS, Tom pursued a degree in Multi-Media Journalism at Bournemouth University. While studying, he secured a role as an Online Video Editor with AFC Bournemouth. His career continued to soar as he worked as an Assistant Video Journalist for the London 2012 Olympics, and he has since been involved in prestigious events including the FIFA Women’s World Cup and UEFA tournaments. Tom’s career has taken him across the globe, from Brazil to France, America to Ukraine. Currently, he serves as a Director at Warner Bros. Discovery, where he contributes to the TNT Sports production team, creating a diverse range of sports content for television.
Throughout the seminar, Tom’s passion and wealth of experience resonated with the pupils, leaving a lasting impression. Thank you to Tom for leading this Careers Seminar. We look forward to welcoming more speakers and alumni to RGS to deliver Careers Seminars during the academic year.
