A Thrilling British Science Week
RGS Worcester has been buzzing with scientific excitement this week as we celebrated British Science Week, which runs from 7–16 March. This year’s theme, ‘Change and Adapt,’ provided the perfect backdrop for a series of engaging activities.
The week began with our annual Science ‘Eggstravaganza,’ welcoming pupils from RGS Dodderhill, RGS Springfield and RGS The Grange on the first day, followed by pupils from local Primary Schools on the second. As part of RGS Worcester’s Award Winning Outreach and Partnership work, the event encouraged young scientists to apply their creativity and problem-solving skills in an exciting engineering challenge. Following a welcome from the Headmaster and an introduction by Head of Science, Dr Howard Smith, pupils were tasked with designing and constructing a bridge strong enough to suspend a weight from its centre. Armed with papercraft straws, paperclips, string, and card, teams had just 15 minutes to design and an hour to build their structures.
The winners of the external outreach event were Broadheath C of E Primary School, whose stable, crane-like design impressed the judges and secured them first place. Northwick Manor Primary School took second place, while Great Witley C of E Primary School came third for their creativity. The winners were awarded a Sphero robot and ‘Horrible Science’ books and stationery, while the runners-up received notebooks and pens.
Beyond the ‘Eggstravaganza’ events, the rest of British Science Week at RGS Worcester was packed with exciting activities. On Wednesday, Years Seven and Eight pupils explored ecosystems, considering how organisms adapt to environmental changes. Taking inspiration from terrariums, pupils built their own miniature ecosystems in jars.
Thursday saw the judging of the Lower Sixth poster competition. In Physics, an Astrophysics Roadshow brought thrilling insights into the mysteries of space.
Today, Lower School pupils enjoyed an exciting display of Chemistry experiments filled with ‘whizzes and bangs.’ RGS The Grange’s Science Project Fair also took place, and the School launched the Royal Society of Biology’s Photography Competition, focusing on restoring biodiversity and habitats.
Adding to the excitement, we have also received the fabulous results of the recent Science Olympiads. Pupils will soon be receiving their awards and certificates, and we look forward to sharing news of their fantastic achievements in the RGS Times.
It has been a truly inspiring week, filled with curiosity, discovery, and a passion for science at RGS Worcester!
