Opening Night Awaits for a Spellbinding Student-led Production

With just a few days until opening night, anticipation is building for the student-led Senior School production of Timberlake Wertenbaker’s ‘The Ash Girl’. Running for three performances, including a matinee, this production promises to be an unforgettable theatrical experience, showcasing the talent of RGS students.

The cast and crew have worked tirelessly on every aspect of the production, from promoting ticket sales and structuring the programme to organising backstage operations and perfecting their performances. Their commitment is all the more impressive given their busy Academic and Co-curricular schedules, and they deserve high praise for bringing this ambitious production to life. The experience of leading and producing a play has provided valuable insight into the dedication and teamwork required for a successful drama production.

‘The Ash Girl’ follows the story of a young girl struggling to believe she can attend the Ball hosted by Prince Amir. With her mother gone and her father absent, she must confront the monsters that have taken hold of her heart and mind. Through this captivating and thought-provoking play, Wertenbaker explores the challenges and triumphs of growing up.

Director of Drama, Mrs Jilly Witcomb, expressed her enthusiasm, saying: “This play is one of my all-time favourites, which is why I have chosen to direct it for the second time as our first Senior Play at RGS. This year, we have two casts of fantastic performers, and it has been a pleasure to work with them over the past few weeks. Both casts have taken full ownership of the production—producing, choreographing, costuming, marketing, structuring the programme, and organising their own backstage teams. The staging and setting have been particularly exciting, and I hope audiences will appreciate not only the visual elements but also the development of such compelling characters.”
