A Michaelmas Term of Sporting Excellence
The Michaelmas term at RGS Worcester has been an exceptional showcase of sporting talent, determination, and team spirit. Pupils across all Year groups have demonstrated remarkable skill and dedication, achieving outstanding results in our Winter Focus Sports.
Netball
The Senior Netball teams started the year with impressive performances. The 1st VII played 12 matches in total. In the Cup matches, they advanced to the Regional Round after key victories against Hanley Swan, Malvern College, and King’s Worcester in the County Round. Meanwhile, the Under 14 team reached the semi-finals of the ‘Sisters in Sport’ Plate this week, reflecting their competitive spirit and skill. The next round will be played in the Lent term.
Football
The Senior Football teams had a productive term. The 1st XI played 10 matches and gained valuable experience ahead of the traditional Football season. The Under 18A squad built on last season’s success, competing against top schools, including Wrekin, Malvern and Clifton College, Shrewsbury, Millfield, and Repton Schools. Their play has been marked by confident possession and resilient defence, evidenced by numerous clean sheets. A special thanks must go to the Football coaching team for their unwavering commitment throughout the term.
Hockey
Hockey at RGS continues to flourish, with notable successes across all age groups. The 1st XI remained unbeaten at home, while the Under 14A team reached the quarter-finals of the National Cup—a major milestone. Every girl in Years Seven and Eight participated in competitive matches, supported by extended training sessions at the Hockey Centre.
The Senior teams started the season with a successful pre-season tour to Malvern College and Nottingham, playing nine matches in three days. The Under 18 teams celebrated significant wins, including a 10-0 victory over Hereford Cathedral School and a 7-0 triumph against Shrewsbury School. They advanced to Round 4 of the England Hockey Cup after a decisive 3-1 win over King’s School Worcester.
The Under 16 team progressed to Round 4 of the England Hockey Cup, while the Under 15 and Under 14 teams showed strong form, achieving notable wins and developing well for future seasons.
Rugby
RGS Rugby enjoyed a highly successful term with a 75% win rate across all teams. The Under 14 team progressed to the last 32 in the National Cup after victories over King’s School Worcester, Bromsgrove, and Oakham Schools. The Senior teams excelled, with the 1st XV securing thrilling wins against King’s School Gloucester and Christ College Brecon. The fixtures against King’s School Worcester across the Year groups yielded seven wins, two draws, and only one loss.
Lower School boys from Years Seven and Eight played regularly, ensuring full participation. The seamless transition of Prep School players into Senior Rugby has strengthened the teams, with several B, C, and D teams remaining unbeaten.
Rowing
RGS rowers celebrated major accomplishments on national and international stages. Highlights include Olivia Hodgson’s victory at the Home International Beach Sprint Regatta and her and Lucy Whiteley’s performance for the Great Britain team at the World Beach Sprint Finals. The two RGS girls secured the Gold medal at the Coupe de la Jeunesse Beach Sprint event. Meanwhile, the RGS Boat Club achieved multiple wins at the Stourport Small Boats Head. Several strong individual performances and a Silver medal for the team in the relay at the British Indoor Championships underscored the School’s Rowing prowess. Congratulations to the rowers including Daniel Foster who has been selected for British Rowing’s Regional Development Programme.
Other Sporting Highlights
- Success in many other sports at RGS including: Cross-Country, Equestrian, Fencing, Golf, Swimming, Table-tennis, Tennis – all reported in the RGS Times – the list goes on.
- Winter Cricket Nets: Excellent participation from boys and girls, reflecting strong engagement.
- Fitness Suite: A consistently busy term showcasing pupils’ dedication to fitness.
- Lower School Athletic Development: Over a third of Years Seven and Eight pupils participated in Friday morning Athletic development sessions.
These achievements highlight the breadth of sporting opportunities at RGS Worcester and the dedication of both pupils and staff. We eagerly anticipate building on this success in the Lent term.
