‘Severn Shield’ Showcases Strength, Skill, and Spirit
On Wednesday night, the highly anticipated ‘Severn Shield’ Hockey match took place at Bishop Perowne School, hosted by King’s School. Both teams entered the contest with high spirits, having enjoyed a successful run of results in recent weeks. The game was played in drizzly conditions for the third consecutive year, but the weather did little to dampen the enthusiasm of the crowd, who came out in force to support their schools.
King’s School got off to a stronger start, scoring two early goals in the first five minutes. The RGS players soon regained their rhythm, controlling much of the game for the remaining 55 minutes. RGS scored a goal but the equaliser eluded them despite sustained pressure and several short-corners awarded.
Reflecting on the match, Head of Hockey, Miss Sally Walton OLY, expressed her pride in the RGS players, saying: “Although the result didn’t go our way this time, I am immensely proud of the resilience the team showed after falling behind so early. The girls followed the game plan and dominated possession and chances for long stretches. In Sport, it often comes down to fine margins, and unfortunately, we were unable to convert all of our opportunities. Both coaching teams wanted this to be an occasion where the girls could demonstrate their incredible talents and the progress of Girls’ Sport in recent years—and I believe we succeeded.”
Congratulations to King’s School on their success, and a huge well done to our RGS players for representing the School with such pride and determination. The match was a showcase of top-tier Hockey, highlighting the skills and determination of both teams. Other Year groups and teams have been playing King’s School this week and we look forward to hosting King’s at the Worcester International Hockey Centre next year.
