RGS Golf Team Faces ISGA Challenge and Year Seven Pupil Impresses on Junior Tour
The RGS Worcester Golf team recently travelled to Olton Golf Club to face Solihull School in the opening round of the ISGA Matchplay tournament. Set on a sunny October afternoon, the stage was perfect for an exciting clash, though RGS faced a formidable challenge against opposition players, all boasting single-figure handicaps.
Despite the tough competition, all three RGS players—Jay Bennett, Sydney Blanchenot, and Eleanor Dicken—rose to the occasion with spirited performances. Jay and Eleanor remained competitive throughout their matches, displaying determination and skill. However, both narrowly missed out, ending their rounds with 3 and 2 defeats after battling to stay within touching distance of their opponents.
The day’s highlight came from Sydney Blanchenot, who faced a player with a significantly lower handicap. Refusing to be overawed, Sydney demonstrated grit and focus to push the match to the final hole. With all eyes on her, she delivered a clutch performance on the 18th, winning the hole to secure a hard-fought halve and earn RGS a share of the points.
Ultimately, the team’s efforts were not quite enough and they move into the Plate competition next. Nevertheless, the RGS players walked away with their heads held high after a brave showing against high-calibre opponents.
Year Seven pupil Edward Perry Wins Under 14 Junior Tour
In more exciting news for RGS Golf, Year Seven pupil Edward Perry has enjoyed a remarkable season on the Robert Rock Junior Golf Tour, culminating in his victory in the Under 14 (net) Order of Merit. Competing in a series of 14 events across some of the country’s most prestigious Golf courses—including The Belfry and Frilford Heath—Edward secured the overall win at Longcliffe Golf Club last week.
Edward’s consistent performances throughout the season, from April to October, saw him emerge as one of the standout players on the tour. His dedication and talent were rewarded with the Order of Merit title. Now, his season will extend even further, as he has qualified to compete in the Junior World Championships in Ireland next summer.
Not only has Edward shone on the Robert Rock Tour, but he has also been a key figure for the Worcestershire Under 14 County team, representing his county alongside fellow RGS pupil Ciaran Hession-Wilson. Edward has had a flawless season with the County team, winning all his matches and further demonstrating his impressive ability on the course.
Edward and Ciaran’s passion for Golf is clear, and they have shown great pride in representing Worcestershire.
We wish all of our golfers the very best with their play during the tough winter months and look forward to hearing about their further success throughout the year.
