Olivia and Lucy Selected for GB Rowing Team
Following a highly successful summer of racing, we are delighted to announce that Upper Sixth Form students Lucy Whiteley and Olivia Hodgson have been selected to race for the Great Britain Under 19 team at the 2024 World Rowing Beach Sprint Finals. They are currently away in Genoa, Italy taking part from 13-15 September.
For Olivia, this follows selection to compete for GB at the Coupe de la Jeunesse, an international rowing competition held in the Czech Republic over the summer holiday. In the coxless quadruple scull racing the two seat Olivia Hodgson qualified for the B final on both days. On Saturday the crew came second in the B final and on Sunday they won the final convincingly.
Lucy clinched victory in the Welsh Under 19 Beach Sprint Championships over the summer, leading to her selection for GB.
Now, both Lucy and Olivia represent half of the GB Beach Sprints team—a remarkable achievement for them and for RGS Worcester!
Head of Rowing, Mr Tim Messent, is delighted by their achievements, saying, “It has been a great pleasure to work with Olivia and Lucy and witness their development over the last year. Selection for the Great Britain Rowing Team in the World Beach Sprint Finals is a huge achievement, and I would like to thank Welsh Rowing and British Rowing for their support. I am extremely proud of both students and look forward to following the event remotely and cheering them on!”
Both rowers have shown incredible dedication to Rowing throughout their time at RGS and it is particularly exciting since Rowing Beach Sprints will be included in the next Olympics in the USA.
We eagerly await more exciting updates from these talented athletes!
